Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

Brief Background:
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a small evergreen shrub that grows to about four or five feet tall. It is found in dry areas of Africa, India and the Middle East. Ashwagandha has been used in Ayurvedic medicine in India for hundreds of years as an “adaptogenic” herb (rasayana), meaning that it is used with the intention to help the body resist physiological and psychological stress. It is purported to tone and normalize (revitalize) bodily functions.

Expert Opinion Precedent:
Ashwagandha has been used traditionally and by herbal experts to treat stress, improve physical energy and overall health. The name Ashwagandha is a combination of the Sanskrit word ashva, meaning horse, and gandha, meaning smell. The root has been described as having a strong “horse-like” aroma, although some experts suggest that the origin of the name suggests that one who ingests it can attain the strength and vitality of a horse. The term “Indian ginseng” originates in the West.
