Damiana (Turnera diffusa) 

Brief Background:
Damiana includes the aromatic species Turnera diffusa, Turnera aphrodisiaca and Turnera ulmifolia. These closely-related plants belong to the family of Turneraceae and grow wild in the subtropical regions of Africa and the America’s. Damiana is widely used in traditional medicine as an anti-cough and diuretic.  Damiana has a mildly relaxing effect and promotes healthy sleep.

In the Mexican culture, damiana is used for gastrointestinal disorders, and damiana extract has shown antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, which may have gastrointestinal effects.

Expert Opinion and Historic Precedent:
According to one study, damiana was reported as one of the top six highest progesterone-receptor binding herbs commonly consumed.

Traditionally, damiana has been mixed with nux vomica as a commonly used homeopathic remedy.
Damiana has been used for coughs, gastrointestinal disorders, and diuresis. In Brazil, the closely related Turnera ulmifolia L. is used as an anti-inflammatory agent.
