Nettle (Urtica ioica)
Brief Background:
Found in Africa, Europe, the United States and Canada, stinging nettle is a perennial plant that has been used as a medicinal agent since ancient times. The genus name Urtica comes from the Latin verb urere, meaning “to burn,” because of its urticate (stinging) hairs that cover the stem and underside of the leaves. The species name dioica means “two houses” because the plant usually has male or female flowers.
The most common uses for stinging nettle are treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), arthritis, allergic disorder, hay fever, pain, cough, tuberculosis, strengthens the adrenals, restore youthful flexibility to blood vessels, as an astringent and expectorant, urinary tract disorders, and externally as a hair and scalp remedy for oily hair and dandruff. It is also frequently used as a diuretic.

Nettle has been used as a medicinal plant since ancient times. In 3 BC, nettle juice was prescribed as an external application to treat snakebites and scorpion stings. It was also given internally as an antidote to plant poisons, such as hemlock or henbane.
By the first and second centuries AD, nettle preparations were being used as a diuretic, for dog bites, for the relief of menstruation, and for the treatment of respiratory disorders, infections and nosebleeds.
