Passion flower

Passion flower

Passion flower (Passiflora incarnate), has historically been used as a sedative and hypnotic (for insomnia), nerve disorders, and gastrointestinal complaints. In the Americas, the region of the flower’s origin, some Native American groups have traditionally used the plant as a mild sedative. In Europe, since the 16th century, passionflower has been used as an ingredient in many tranquilizing preparations.

Some practitioners recommend passion flower for insomnia, anxiety, bronchial asthma, pediatric excitability and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Other research suggests that passion flower may help treat congestive heart failure, associated with cardiovascular diseases (giving it the label of a “cardiotionic”).
