Tribulus terrestris has a long history of use for a variety of conditions. It has been suggested that it was used in ancient Egypt, Greece and India as a physical rejuvenation tonic. In China, it is used as a component of therapy for conditions affecting the liver, kidney, cardiovascular system and immune systems.

Tribulus terrestris has a long history of use in folk medicine. Traditionally, it has been used for a variety of reproductive conditions, such as infertility and impotence, as well as for muscle strength and general health. Although safe when appropriate doses are taken orally in humans, it has been well-documented to be toxic to sheep and goats.
In Ayurvedic medicine, tribulus fruit has cooling, diuretic, tonic, and aphrodisiac properties, and is used for painful urination, kidney and bladder stones, urinary disorders, and impotence.
