Rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis) is a familiar dense, evergreen, aromatic shrub grown in many parts of the world. The fresh and dried leaves are used frequently in the kitchen for seasoning food.

Rosemary is commonly used to relieve symptoms caused by respiratory disorders. The oil is used externally for joint pain and poor circulation. Extracts of rosemary as an essential oil are used in aromatherapy to ease anxiety and to increase alertness.

Memory Synergy (to help you study)

3 drops of rosemary essential oil

3 drops of lemon essential oil

3 drops of basil essential oil

This essential oil blend can be added with a dropper to a diffuser or aromatherapy lamp.

Rosemary helps with poor circulation when used as a cream, liniment, or added to massage oil. Use as an ingredient in a facial mask to prevent wrinkles, in a herbal face wash to even skin tone and to counteract oily skin.

Acne Toner

1 tbs. apple cider vinegar

1 tbs. of witch hazel

½ cup of aloe vera juice

3 drops of tea tree essential oil

3 drops of rosemary essential oil

Mix together in bowl and pour into a glass or plastic bottle. Shake well before every use. After cleansing your face in the morning and evening, moisten a sterile cotton pad and gently wipe over your face to remove excess oil.

Rosemary can be used as a scalp massage. It has the ability to stimulate hair growth. It can slow down or permanently stop premature hair loss. When applied to the roots and scalp it is helpful in clearing many cases of dandruff as it soothes and conditions dry, flaky, scalp.

Castor (Ricinus communis)

The castor oil plant is a native of India where it bears several ancient Sanskrit names, the most ancient and most usual being Eranda, which has passed into several other Indian languages. The plant thrives in tropical climates where it can grow 30 to 40 feet high; in the Azores and the warmer countries – Algeria, Egypt, Greece and the Riviera – it is of more slender growth, attaining an average height of only 10 to 15 feet.

Castor oil is referred to as the “cure-all” remedy. Castor oil is used externally as a soothing emollient for dry skin, dermatitis, and other skin disease. It is a heavy protective oil that seals in moisture and is soothing for all skin types. Several other uses include hair tonic that keeps hair looking soft and shiny. Castor oil is a humectant that draws moisture into hair and skin. The anti-bacterial and anti-fungicidal properties of ricinoleic acid in castor oil protect the scalp and hair from infections which can cause hair loss. The Omega-9 fatty acids in castor oil also nourish the hair and prevent the scalp from drying.

4 drops rosemary

Add all of the oils in a small glass bottle, shake to mix. You may warm the oil before application by placing the bottle it in a warm water bath. For application, massage a few drops into the scalp area. Apply several times a week.

Healing with Calendula Flowers

Calendula (Calendula officinalis), also known as marigold, is one of several herbs used traditionally to treat conjunctivitis (pink eye) and other eye inflammations as it helps to reduce the swelling and redness of eye infections. It is also believed that calendula may have some anti-spasmodic action, and as such, it has been used to relieve menstrual cramps.

Calendula promotes healing and the growth of healthy skin cells. It is antiseptic and antibacterial. A compress or a poultice of the flowers (a warm, mass of powdered or macerated herbs, applied directly to the skin) is an excellent first aid for burns, scalds, and insect stings. A warm compress is useful to treat varicose veins, while a cold infusion may be used as an eye wash for conjunctivitis.

Uses:

Use calendula oil, in a salve, or as a poultice. The oil will effectively treat burns, stop bleeding, soothe pain of injuries and irritation, and promote the healing of wounds.

Pour 2 cups boiling water over 5 tablespoons of calendula petals. Steep 30 minutes. Strain and use as a compress. Very soothing, also good for minor cuts and scrapes.

Calendula is a natural conditioner that promotes healthy hair by hydrating the scalp.

Calendula Cleansing Milk

Calendula, also called marigold, is a powerful all-purpose skin helper since it is highly emollient, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory. This cleansing milk is a healing addition to your beauty routine.

4 tbs. of avocado oil

(or one mashed fresh avocado)

2 tbs. of calendula oil

2 tbs. of aloe vera gel

10 drops of grapefruit seed extract

(or the juice of one grapefruit)

Stir the aloe vera, the grapefruit seed extract, (juice of one grapefruit), calendula infused oil, and avocado oil, mixing well to combine. Scoop some of the milk and massage gently into skin. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

For puffy eyes

2 tsp. grated raw potato (no skin)

1 tsp. of calendula oil

Mix well, and then apply around the eyes. Cover with cool, damp cotton or gauze for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Jobojba (Simmondsia chinenis) is a shrub native to the Sonoran Desert of northwestern Mexico and neighboring regions in Arizona and southern California. The woody evergreen shrub may reach 15 ft. (4.5 m) in height, with a life span of 100-200 years, depending on environmental conditions.

Jojoba oil is not oil but a liquid wax produced in the bean like seed which is similar to sebum, a natural moisturizer produced by our own bodies that protect hair and skin from drying out.

Jojoba oil has nutrients, such as: vitamin E, B complex vitamins, and the minerals silicon, chromium, copper, zinc, and iodine. http://www.greenherbalremedies.com/blog/benefits-of-jojoba-oil-2/

Applying jojoba oil to skin and hair increases hydration and balances moisture.
As a natural emollient, absorbs into the skin better than other oils. According to Dr. James A Duke, Jojoba butter and cocoa butter are the best emollients. They contain essential fatty acids, which easily penetrate the skin. He suggests, cocoa butter, jojoba butter, and gotu kola combined make a potent wrinkle – fighting cream.

The oil works on all skin types whether you have dry, oily, normal, or sensitive skin. Especially with sensitive skin, you want to include a skin care regime that has simple, pure ingredients.

Moisture Rich Oil (for all skin types)

2 tsp. macadamia nut oil

2 tsp. hazel nut oil

1/4 tsp. jojoba oil

Mix together and store in a small container. Apply to clean moist skin, with your fingertips onto the face, avoiding the eyes.

Jojoba Body Polisher

½ cup sea salt

The hair is nourished at the root by your diet. Hair loss can be caused by diabetes, stress, skin disease, vitamin deficiency, thyroid disease, excess estrogen, iron deficiency, poor circulation, weight loss and acute illness. It can be caused by legal (over – the – counter) drugs, radiation, surgery, inadequate nourishment before menopause or during pregnancy, and chemotherapy. Hair loss can also be caused by chemical treatments for the hair, heat and styling, or allergic reactions from synthetic hair care products.

Hair loss/baldness is referred to as alopecia. If the hair falls out in patches, it is referred to as alopecia areata. This condition is usually temporary and rarely leads to baldness. Other factors that are involved in hair loss include heredity, hormones, and aging.

A less dramatic, but more prevalent, type of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia (AGA), or male pattern baldness. AGA is common in men. As the name implies, a genetic or hereditary predisposition to the disorder and the presence of androgens-male sex hormones-are involved in this condition. Research indicates that the hair follicles of individuals susceptible to AGA may have receptors programmed to slow down or shut off hair production under the influence of androgens.

Woman sometimes have the same type of hair loss, but it is not usually an extensive and most often does not occur until after menopause. All women experience some hair thinning as they grow older, especially after menopause, but in some it begins as early as puberty. In addition, most women lose some hair two or three months after having a baby because hormonal changes prevent normal hair loss during pregnancy.

Recommendations
Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in starch. This may help to slow down the process of hair loss. Fruits and vegetables contain flavonoids, many of which are antioxidants that may provide protection for the hair follicles and encourage hair growth.

Eat plenty of foods high in biotin. Good food sources of biotin include brewer’s yeast, brown rice, bulgur, green peas, lentils, oats, soybeans, sunflower seeds, and walnuts.

Supplements can be taken for deficiencies. Vitamins A, C, D, and E, are needed for proper growth. Essential fatty acid complex, or primrose oil, zinc, vitamin B complex, B vitamins work best when taken together. Or recommended hair supplements approved by your doctor.

Use shampoos and conditioners that contain aloe vera, jojoba oil, chamomile, marigold, nettle, and peppermint, to keep hair healthy as well.

Be careful of using products that are not natural on the hair. Allergic reactions to chemicals in these products occur frequently. Use natural hair care products.

Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is actually a mixture of long chain monounsaturated liquid wax esters. They are structurally different from triglycerides, which are what most of the other seed oils are made of. Technically speaking, it isn’t really an oil after all.

Jojoba oil is extracted from seeds of the jojoba plant, scientifically known as Simmondsia chinensis, which are indigenous to southern United States and northern Mexico. Pure jojoba oil has a bright, golden color whereas processed jojoba oil is clear and transparent. It has a high shelf life and can be stored for long periods as it is a relatively stable liquid. It does not oxidize easily and will not turn rancid compared to other oils because it does not contain triglycerides, unlike most other vegetable oils such as grape seed oil and coconut oil.

Jojoba oil is rarely sold in its pure form . The total area planted with jojoba plants in the United States is about 45,000 acres and it takes three years for the seed to grow into a plant. Ninety-five percent of them end up in personal care or health products, blended with other ingredients. The main bulk of jojoba oil is farmed in Israel and Argentina and exported.

In the 1960s, the sperm whale was becoming an endangered species because they were being hunted for their oil, which is comprised of ninety percent wax esters. Back then, they were widely used in thousands of health and cosmetic products. When importing whale oils into the United States was outlawed in 1971, jojoba oil was discovered. It was found that jojoba oil is far superior to whale oils, also known as squalene, in many ways and is more beneficial to human health. Today, it is prominent in a wide variety of products.

So why jojoba oil?

Jojoba oil is very similar to sebum

What makes it so unique compared to other seed oils is that jojoba oil is structurally and chemically very similar to the human sebum produced by the sebaceous glands in our skin because sebum is also largely comprised of wax mono esters. In most cases, it can act as a substitute while giving similar or added benefits compared to sebum. This property will be discussed further throughout the site.

It is extremely safe to use

Jojoba oil is non-toxic, non-comedogenic and non-allergenic. This means that it will not clog pores and will not cause any allergic reactions. It is also not an irritant, so it can safely be used around the eyes and on the skin. In addition to that, it does not cause a greasy feeling when used on the skin like other oils do.

It has a high content of beneficial minerals and Vitamin E

It contains many different varieties of tocopherols which make up Vitamin E and many other natural minerals. Vitamin E is well known for promoting healthy and clear skin.

It prevents damage from free radicals

Jojoba oil is an antioxidant and protects you from the damaging effects of free radicals, which is believed to contribute or cause various chronic diseases like cancer.

It is antibacterial

Most bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus and the fungus Candida albicans cannot reproduce and die when they come into contact with jojoba oil. In fact, it is so antibacterial that it can be used as a fungicide to control mildew. Imagine how powerful that is?
